Rounds 2 & 3 of this competition took place on Saturday: Winnersh Wanderers (Thames Valley Petanque Association) vs Codrington Arms (Chipping Sodbury in the Great Western Region), and Burnham vs Petanque Wallingford Red Kites. Winnersh Wanderers lost 4.1 and Red Kites also lost 4:1. So after lunch Burnham played Codrington Arms – and Codrington Won 3:2.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) asked all its members and supporters throughout the whole country to hold fundraising fish suppers on 14, 15 or 16 October. Our contribution was to hold an evening of petanque last Friday.
Twenty eight people attended to play 3 games of petanque on a beautiful evening – for once, no wind! Two hours later some more supporters arrived and we all adjourned to the club house in the Sports Park for the Fish Pie feast and raffle. T had spent all day making enough pie for 36 people and this, with M's coleslaw and some salad, constituted our feast (Thanks M and everyone who contributed a raffle prize).
T had done a display (see pics below) of the rescue of the Dutch motor-schooner Hermina, that was wrecked on the Needle Rock in Fishguard Bay in December 1920 and G's grandfather Tom Perkins's involvement in that rescue. On show were photographs of his bronze medal and a copy of the vellum awarded by the RNLI, a photograph of the silver watch (which still works) awarded by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and some write up about the lifeboat and black and white photographs of the Charterhouse and crew in London where their gallantry was rewarded. The Charterhouse was eventually decommissioned and sold in 1930. This lifeboat served as a pleasure boat for 60 years and has now been returned to the Lifeboat station at Fishguard, where it is hoped it will form part of a Visitor attraction.
We all watched the film of the presentation, organised by Steve – thank you. It is hard to believe that original silent cine film is nearly 100 years old!
Thank you to everyone who supported this event, we hope you had some fun play and enjoyed the supper afterwards.
(I am so sorry I forgot to take my camera to photograph the players and everyone tucking into the pie! But we made a tidy sum for the RNLI which I will send off as soon as I have all the funds in.)
I still want to remain anonymous for now but I am an even smarter mouse ... and I love to play petanque ......
