In all 80 teams participated over the two day weekend – players from Guernsey, Jersey, Holland, UK (Cornwall, PW, MTTA, Bath, Cricklade –18 people at least), South of France and I dunno where else! We had wonderful weather – a bit misty to start, but soon the sun came out, and the Sunday was just as nice. We hope to go again next year. Jersey want us to come to them too …
Six players went from MTTA and two from Petanque Wallingford went to Guernsey to play in the Open. The PW players stayed in an auberge near the Petanque 'greenhouses' and the MTTA players stayed in the Peninsula Hotel. We were rained off in August, so a rematch was scheduled for after the friendly matches on 10th September. I didn't realize that it would be the mens' teams playing petanque, and not the same people who had been to the rained-off 8th August games. It came as a bit of a shock as they were all new to the game, so our 6 helper-members were quite busy! And there we were thinking we would put our feet up and let them 'get on with it'. In the event, we started at 5.00 and everyone had a great (very noisy) time until about 7.00 when a very tired crowd finally went home!
We hope to have more play next year when hockey is over for the season. Style Acre came to play today. Twelve people came (3 helpers) making two groups of 6 and thus 4 triples teams. One team in each group had 2 'rusty' boules each and one had 'shiney' boules. (We will have a problem when the newer boules get rusty, but we will cross that bridge! Perhaps we can get enough money together to buy some proper boules to play with.)
Moiya came down today to help today and she said "it’s really nice to see people enjoying themselves, applauding each other for good shots. One of my group picked up so quickly about the scoreboard. I had explained about moving the two pegs down the board and keeping one from the previous score. Well, he couldn’t get there quickly enough to do it. He got it right every time. They are all very different with different problems and personalities". One of T's group asked if we could keep a running score and have a 'jolly' at the end of the season. She will make a plan. The long-range weather forecast says this 'Indian Summer' is going to continue into November so we look forward to some more play. Here are some pictures of Bunkfest - nothing to do with us, but all the tents of the visitors to this music festival (3 days!) surround our Boulodrome. No one invaded our patch, thank goodness. But from being busy with players and nothing around us, to hundreds of tents makes interesting viewing! |
