SINGLES
The June singles trophy match was cancelled because of bad weather. So both the singles and doubles trophies were played for in July: the knockout match for the Singles trophy was played on 20th July and turned out to be a most eventful match. All the new members took part in play and some people were very surprised and gratified to see how far they got in the competition. Louise did extremely well - she beat Mike C 13:3, then she beat newboy Kevin 13:12 and finished up in the semi final where she met Chris S. Unfortunately she went off the boil a bit and he won 13:9. She did some terrific shots and we spectators were all hugely entertained! She gave Chris a run for his money.
Tony beat Gerry, and then Jules but in the quarter finals was beaten by Chris H 13:4. So Chris H met Chris S in the final - They got to 10 all and Chris S got that vital 3 points - Game over! Chris S is the new club Singles Champion (again). Quite a few people stayed to watch the final match, which was nice. We had a lovely evening for it and were able to finish play by 9.30.
DOUBLES
The doubles trophy was played for on the 27th July. This was a team knockout - players chose who they would play with and we had 16 teams taking part. Cheryl jokingly said she would probably be knocked out in the first round, but was prepared to give it a go. She was paired with Alec and much to her surprise, she ended up in the final against Louise and Steve. After a closely contested match Steve and Louise eventually won just after 10pm!
SELECT PAIRS
Early August saw the select pairs playoffs. In the select pairs competition players chose who they would play with. 2 leagues of 7 teams were created and everyone in each league played all the others in that league. They had some 4 months to do it, finishing at the end of July with the final being held on the first Clubnight in August. Adrian and Sarah (playing as the Black Berets) were first in the one group with Gerry and Moiya (Cream Crackers) coming second. The two 'boys' (The Rookies), came first in the second group with JJ and Tony (Jammy Dodgers) coming second in that group.
So the Black Berets played Jammy Dodgers and The Rookies played Cream Crackers.
Black Berets and Rookies won their games, so they played each other and Black Berets were the final winners of the Trophy. Well done Sarah and Adrian.
