The Red Kites played the Red Herrings on 6th April and the Kites won 5:2. Next week the Kites play Combined - 3 players from MTTA and 3 from Bozos. We will be missing the two 'boys' (we call them boys because they are so much younger than us!) so we will need to play really well ... Mark is playing in the Home National Qualifier in Nottingham with three Burnham players.. Good luck Mark, and good luck Kites
Serious Catch up
A lot has been happening, so this is serious catch up.
In March the Winter Pairs Final was held at Burnham and was won by our very own Mark Dowman and Chris Hurst.
The shelter flat pack was delivered from Holland, and assembled in a day on Thursday 26th April. It took at bit of head scratching where to begin, but once the assembly squad started it went very well and slotted together beautifully.
See https://youtu.be/p9KWxHyDgYI to view the final part of the roofing (tongue and groove) being done. Only the roof felting, edging and painting needs to be done and we will be the proud owners of a very classy shelter!
Below is a picture of the shelter construction team.
The Regional Doubles was supposed to be held at Arborfield, but more people than anticipated entered resulting in insufficient pistes being available (they needed nine), so the tournament was relocated to the PW Boulodrome and was held on Sunday 29th April.
We made full use of the shelter – it was so cold! I sat out of the wind, wrapped in a blanket, cuddling my hot water bottle and cheered our three teams from a distance!
Mark and Dave C and Julian and Chris S (PW members) met in the 3rd and 4th place play off and Mark and Dave won. Paul and Dean and Christian and Bob B (all from Burnham) met in the final. After a very close march, Paul and Dean won. Well done everyone; a lovely day was had by all.
Sunday Leagues and Weekday Leagues continue – our next matches are 6th May at the Boulodrome – PW Red Herrings v PW Red Kites, 8th May is the midweek league PW against MTTA at Marlow
We have two teams from PW entered in the Londonnaise, on 9th June at Crystal Palace and then we have the regional triples match on 10th June, at Arborfield - but some of PW peple are going to help the Newbury Rotary with their Petanque in the Square.
Our shelter plans are steaming ahead - the paved base was laid on 19th and 20th April. The average age of the six installers was 71, so they did very well to get it down in two days!
Thanks to Steve, our official photographer .
T provided the chuck-wagon to keep the workers fed and watered.
As you know, we have two of these beautiful boules and yesterday (11th March) we had a lovely day to play for them. We had a super turnout - 25 people came down to the Boulodrome (including me and G, but we did not play, we 'just' organised). We could only play 3 games because it was Mothers Day and people had to leave for the lunch with their famalies.
And the new winners for 2018 are Moiya Clark (3 wins +22 and Richard Doughty (3 wins +16). Ava Dowman, who is 9, was the lady who came second (3 wins +16). Ava, Josie, our newest members, and Addison are being coached by Paul Lancaster a retired National Youth Coach. It would be fantastic to have 3 more youngsters to make up a team ... Well done to everyone and thank you for coming to play.
We played Winter Pairs yesterday at the Boulodrome Wallingford - League 1 and Leagues 2 and 3 at Arborfield. Cloudy with occasional drizzle, but not freezing like it was on Friday!
League 1 (standing in this league)
Mind the Gap (Steve & Wendy) 2nd
The Berets (Julie & Adrian) came 3rd
League 2 (standing in this league)
Red Roses (Chris S and Sarah) came 5th
The Kites (Peter S and Dave Chalkey) came 6th
League 3 (standing in this league)
Pickled Eggs (Mark and Chris ) won all 3 of their games
Smoking Dragon (Gerry & Moiya) came 5th
Red Fox (Thérèse & Alec) came 6th
So overall Pickled Eggs are top so far and Twiglets are second. Still all to play for.
On 25th November we had the Club Annual Lunch. Play started for 25 of us at 11 am (very cold, and windy, but the rain held off …) and while everyone was freezing on the Boulodrome, Cheryl and Thérèse were setting up the Pop Up Shop while Dee and Cynthia were getting the tables ready for lunch. The cooker was giving us cause for concern but we are informed that the Sports Park has received its grant and refurbishment of the kitchen will take place in January 2018.
How did we do? The Pop Up Shop had items made by Cheryl and Thérèse: crochet blankets, knitted Pompom Beanies (with faux fur pompoms!), bootees for children and bigger bods, scarves and various other items for sale with proceeds going towards our shelter (so if it rains we can all huddle in their and keep dry!)
Petanque Players: Rosettes were awarded to Peter Jones for first place, to Steve Gothard for second place and Wendy H for 3rd place John Macland was awarded the Annual Melee Shield. The Pop Up Shop was a great success: we made nearly £200 in the half hour before lunch. Thank you everyone.
Oh, and by the way, if anyone bought a beanie as a gift for someone, we forgot to give you a box to put it in, so see T or C for one. We still have a few beanies, some bootees and some scarves, if you were unable to attend the lunch and want one. And if anyone wants a scarf let Cheryl know before 10th December to give her time to make it. (See the pictures below for an idea of what we have). She has purple and lime green yarn without bobbles on.
I'll never make a famous blogger as I find it so hard to keep up. However, this is 2 week's of worth of activities and, as you will see, we have been extremely busy and managing to PLAY in between too.
So, 18th November saw 5 Petanque Wallingford members and 2 wives join the others in the Region in the Holiday Inn Maidenhead for the annual Thames Valley Presentation Evening. Petanque Wallingford did very well in the various matches that were held in the Region throughout the year, thanks to Mark, Chris H, Chris S, Richard Doughty, Peter Smith, Steve Gothard and Moiya Clark.
Here is a breakdown of their winnings.

For some time we have been thinking about creating some more pistes on our land closer to the pavilion at Hithercoft Sports Park. The constraint had been lack of funds. But at last, with financial help from Tesco and Sport England, and some money from our own coffers we had enough and so building started on 3rd October 2017 and finished yesterday (5th October), just the fencing to finish now and hey presto, three new pistes with a good free draining base and a completey different surface so we can experience playing on something else, without having to leave home!
They are beautifully made and much fun to play on. We are very happy, and John C, the constructor, wants to join the club! So a double joy.
I still want to remain anonymous for now but I am an even smarter mouse ... and I love to play petanque ......
